Season of Creation 2026 – Care for our Common Home
The season of creation concludes today 4th October, feast of St Francis. We are called to continue to treasure our earth and in particular caring for the gift of water.
Pope Leo’s Prayer intention for October
Pope Leo XIV dedicates his October prayer intention to mental health ministry, calling on the Church to listen without judging and accompany those who suffer without excluding them. Let us pray that the mental health ministry be established throughout the Church, helping to overcome the stigma and discrimination of persons with mental illnesses. See https://www.vaticannews.va.
October – Month of the Rosary
Our thanks to the group ‘Couples for Christ’ for a special initiative where they have invited children to make rosary beads that will be distributed this weekend in Saggart church after Mass. A beautiful way for us to reflect on the great gift of the rosary.
First Holy Communion/Confirmation Enrolment
Beginning on Tuesday & Wednesday afternoon in Saggart church a formation course will take place for children preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation & Eucharist and Confirmation. This is to support children from schools that are not parish based but are in our locality. Our thanks to Deacon Paul for leading this program.
Pathways into Pastoral Ministry
This course is for any adult who wants to explore and grow their faith. Over a year, participants are offered inputs on foundational issues of faith and the impact they have on ministry and parish life. There is also time for small group sharing and the opportunity for three different retreat experiences. On completion of the course, people are presented with a certificate.
Pathways is run on a Thursday evening (during term times) at the St Patrick’s campus of DCU in Drumcondra from 7.15pm to 9.15pm. The course starts on September 24th and runs until May 13th, and costs €300.

Newcastle Tidy Towns
A number of people from SDCC plus the Mayor are coming to Newcastle on Monday morning to launch BULBS NOT BONFIRES for this year. This is an initiative to encourage the planting of bulbs in green areas rather than lighting bonfires. It will take place on the green area in front of St Finian’s Church of Ireland at 10am. All are welcome.
Parish Partnership name
Throughout the diocese parishes are being called to come together in new forms. Grouping of parishes is the way ahead for the diocese that is reduced in priests to service local areas. We are privileged that the parish of Saggart, Rathcoole, Brittas and the parish of Newcastle have been working together for many years. A shared Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Committee has been in place for a number of years showing a shared interest and co-operation between the ‘four districts’.
We have been invited to discern a common name that has a resonance throughout the area. A number of matters are considered to be significant in relation to parish partnership patron names.
Generally, a parish partnership name should: have a unifying character, avoiding the name of any one parish/church in the partnership; be appropriate to the partnership mission or connect with a tradition of faith in the area e.g. a local saint’s name or the name of a local monastery or well; be discerned appropriately by people of all of the parishes in the partnership; and not be already in use by another parish partnership in the Archdiocese.
One suggestion raised recently was “Mo Sacra” a saint from the 7th century who set up a monastery in what is currently Saggart cemetery. St Brigid’s Well in Rathcoole, St. Finian’s Well in Newcastle provide other possibilities. Have you any thoughts or suggestions on a name that could be used.
Newman University Church
The annual Newman Lecture takes place on Thursday, 5th November, at 7pm in Newman University Church. Father Paul Murray OP will be giving a lecture ‘Everybody Wants to Be Happy’: Finding The Path to Joy Beyond Disillusion. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after. Father Murray is an Irish Dominican, theologian, and poet from County Down. Author of many books, before retirement he taught the literature of the mystical tradition at the Angelicum University in Rome.
Saint John Henry Newman’s (the founder and builder of University Church) feast day is the 9th of October. One way we will be celebrating as a parish community is praying a novena for the 9 days preceding his feast. You can pick up a card with the novena prayer in church. This will be followed by Sunday Mass with hymns inspired by his writings and tea & biscuits afterwards! All are welcome.
Mass for the Missing
A remembrance Mass for missing people and their families will be held in St Mary’s Church, Sandyford, D18 E5R3, on Saturday, October 10, at 2.30pm. The Mass will be celebrated by Fr Aquinas Duffy. This is a poignant ceremony to pray for missing people, and for comfort and strength for families, and to guide all search efforts towards their successful return. Prayers will also be offered for Irish people missing abroad and pray for an end to the sufferings of these families.
