Pope Leo’s Prayer intention for October

Pope Leo XIV dedicates his October prayer intention to mental health ministry, calling on the Church to listen without judging and accompany those who suffer without excluding them. Let us pray that the mental health ministry be established throughout the Church, helping to overcome the stigma and discrimination of persons with mental illnesses. See https://www.vaticannews.va.

October – Month of the Rosary

In Newcastle you are invited to a special hour of adoration and prayer each Wednesday from 7 – 8pm.

National Synodal Assembly

An important meeting on the Working Document for the Irish National Synodal Assembly takes place in Gormanston, Co Meath, on 17th October. It brings together the fruits of five years of prayer, listening and discernment and will guide delegates as they consider and vote on suggested actions to be presented to the bishops of Ireland.

While the Assembly marks an important moment in the journey, the Synodal Pathway is now moving towards a new phase of implementation. Everyone is invited to read, pray with, and reflect on the Working Document and the question: “What does God want from the Church in Ireland at this time?” We pray for all those taking part in the Assembly and for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Aifreann Faire an Domhnaigh

For those who like to attend Sunday Mass in Irish you are probably aware that most churches that provide this service are generally at an early hour. You may be glad to hear that there will be a Saturday night (vigil) Mass next Saturday 10, Oct in Aughrim St church at 6.30pm with Bishop Donal Roche. As we go to press, we are not sure if this is going to be a weekly or once off event.

Parish Partnership name

Throughout the diocese parishes are being called to come together in new forms. Grouping of parishes is the way ahead for the diocese that is reduced in priests to service local areas. We are privileged that the parish of Saggart, Rathcoole, Brittas and the parish of Newcastle have been working together for many years. A shared Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Committee has been in place for a number of years showing a shared interest and co-operation between the ‘four districts’.

We have been invited to discern a common name that has a resonance throughout the area. A number of matters are considered to be significant in relation to parish partnership patron names.

Generally, a parish partnership name should: have a unifying character, avoiding the name of any one parish/church in the partnership; be appropriate to the partnership mission or connect with a tradition of faith in the area e.g. a local saint’s name or the name of a local monastery or well; be discerned appropriately by people of all of the parishes in the partnership; and not be already in use by another parish partnership in the Archdiocese.

One suggestion raised recently was “Mo Sacra” a saint from the 7th century who set up a monastery in what is currently Saggart cemetery. St Brigid’s Well in Rathcoole, St. Finian’s Well in Newcastle provide other possibilities. Have you any thoughts or suggestions on a name that could be used.

Newman University Church

The annual Newman Lecture takes place on Thursday, 5th November, at 7pm in Newman University Church. Father Paul Murray OP will be giving a lecture ‘Everybody Wants to Be Happy’: Finding The Path to Joy Beyond Disillusion. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after. Father Murray is an Irish Dominican, theologian, and poet from County Down. Author of many books, before retirement he taught the literature of the mystical tradition at the Angelicum University in Rome.

Saint John Henry Newman’s (the founder and builder of University Church) feast day is the 9th of October. One way we will be celebrating as a parish community is praying a novena for the 9 days preceding his feast. You can pick up a card with the novena prayer in church. This will be followed by Sunday Mass with hymns inspired by his writings and tea & biscuits afterwards! All are welcome.

Vocations

Dublin Diocesan Vocation Team is delighted to share some very encouraging news: there are now six people studying for the Archdiocese of Dublin in 2026 — four in Maynooth, studying Philosophy and Theology, and two beginning their Propaedeutic Year in Valladolid, Spain. We give heartfelt thanks to their families, friends and, especially, to the parishes and communities who have supported and encouraged these young men throughout their journey of discernment and continue to accompany them as they prepare for priesthood.

We ask all our parishes and communities to continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and if you know someone who may be considering a vocation, please encourage them to get in touch with the Vocations Team. Fr Seamus McEntee or Fr Bill O’Shaughnessy would be delighted to meet with them, listen to their story and accompany them on their journey of discernment. You can contact us at vocations@dublindiocese.ie or bill.oshaughnessy@dublindiocese.ie.
